My Story

Hi, I’m Julie Wix — founder of Pause & Exhale and the creator of Breathe@work. I’m so pleased you’re here.

I was born in Belfast, Ireland, and have called Sydney home since 1999. For years, I lived the rhythm so many people know well: full‑time work, parenting, constant responsibility, and the quiet pressure to hold everything together. I spent over 15 years leading teams and supporting leaders under pressure, watching people around me burn out while convincing myself I could keep going. Eventually, my own body gave in — frequent lower‑back pain, seizing after stressful meetings — clear signs of stress I couldn’t ignore, even though I had no idea how to find my way out.

Chronic stress and body tension

By my mid‑40s, the constant output began to take a toll. I felt disconnected from myself and my body, and the tension I carried every day started showing up in persistent pain, exhaustion, and a sense that my system was always “on.” I didn’t have language for it at the time — I just knew something wasn’t right.

10 years of chronic symptoms

I did what so many driven, well‑intentioned people do — I kept pushing. I looked for answers in every direction: specialists, therapies, treatments, diets, supplements. I was trying so hard to fix the symptoms so I could keep moving forward. But nothing really changed, because I was tending to everything except the real source of it all — a nervous system caught in long‑term stress.

My breathing pattern was working against me

The turning point came when a specialist gently suggested I explore a mind‑body approach. That single moment changed the trajectory of my life. I discovered that my nervous system was profoundly dysregulated and that even my breathing patterns were working against me. For the first time in years, I understood that my body wasn’t failing — it was signalling.

A whole new world

That experience opened up an entirely new world for me. Building on my honours degree in Psychology, I went on to study breathwork, functional breathing, nervous system regulation, and the science of stress. Bit by bit, I rebuilt my capacity. I learned how to downshift, how to recover, and how to create space between effort and depletion. I stopped fighting my body and began working with it.

That process reshaped everything — not just how I lived, but how I understood human performance, tension, and resilience. And it’s the reason I created the Breathe@work Program. I wanted to share what I had discovered: that we all have an incredible, often‑overlooked ability to regulate, restore, and support ourselves from the inside out. Most of us simply haven’t been taught how.

You can navigate high pressure without sacrificing wellbeing

Today, my work blends psychology, nervous system coaching, breathwork, and lived experience to create practical, evidence‑based programs for workplaces. I help leaders and teams understand their nervous system, build capacity, and navigate pressure without sacrificing their wellbeing.

My story isn’t about struggle — it’s about realising that high performance and chronic tension often travel together, and that there is a better way. A more sustainable way. A more human way.
